Komotini is a city in the northeastern part of Greece, the center of several administrative units (deme of the same name, Nome Rodopi, areas of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace). West Thrace, lying at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains, is a historical area. The city of Komotini is a large economic, commercial, transport and cultural center. Tourists may be interested in its historical sights in the old part of the city, as well as shops and shops with traditional Greek goods.
The name of the city may also sound like Kumujini (a variant of Byzantine times) or Gyumyurzhina (Turkish version). Under the second name at the beginning of the twentieth century, Komotini was known as the capital of the Muslim state of the Gyumyurzhinsky Republic. The city received its current name after the removal of Turkish rule.
In Komotini there are several museums and monuments of architecture and history. The main city attraction is the remains of a fortress built in the IV century by the emperor of Byzantium Theodosius. Other notable buildings are Imaret, a medieval house of mercy, mansions of the local nobility of the second half of the 19th century. The central park of the city is named after St. Paraskeva, a monument to the heroes of World War II is installed on its territory. A few kilometers from Komotini there is a grove and a fort with the same name - Nymphaeum, and at a slightly greater distance there are several ancient cities: Maximianopouli (or the Rhodope Acropolis), Anasiupoli, Streami and other archaeological sites.
