The Monument to Livingston and Stanley is located in Muger, 12 km south of Bujumbura, next to Lake Tanganyika. A huge boulder marks the place where they met and spent two days from November 25 to 27, 1871, a researcher, missionary, doctor David Livingstone and journalist, traveler Henry Morton Stanley. A sick fever after the expedition to the origins of Neil Livingston could not go further and was expecting death when Stanley found him. The traveler said the world famous words: "Dr. Livingstone, I suppose?" Henry Stanley's search expedition was specifically deployed to rescue the missionary.
The fact that the meeting really took place in Ujiji in Tanzania on November 10, 1871 is evidenced by the entries in Stanley’s book “How I Found Livingston”. David Livingstone's daily diary also confirms this fact, but there is a discrepancy in dates. In memory of this significant event, a memorial stone with the names and date drawn on it was erected.
The discoverer and him open
The famous explorer of Africa, the Scottishman David Livingston, seems to be known even to those who have never been interested in Africa. Driven by its motto “Christianity, Commerce, Civilization”, Livingston succeeded, despite all the difficulties, to explore the interior of South Africa, and, in particular, opened to the general public the majestic Mosi oa Tunya waterfall, known to us as Victoria Falls.
Today, in the conservation area, a stone's throw from the roaring abyss on a rectangular square, there is a monument to the discoverer of the waterfall itself, which is a good view of the district, leaning on a cane. The researcher is presented in a hiking suit on a decent sized boulder, before him on the ground on the plates a brief dedication (introduction to the subject, so to speak). He has been standing here since 1934, and opened it, interestingly, the Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia, who was a famous explorer's nephew, and a rather famous sculptor, William Reed Dick, sculpted.
