Attractions Braganza

The city of Braganca arose from a small village with the Roman name Juliobrig on a high plateau. The area was considered rich in its agriculture, it was here that the path from Porto to central Spain passed. Therefore, in 1130. the brother-in-law of King Afonso Enriques Fernand Mendish decided to build a fortress, which was completed for another 200 years under various rulers. In 1442 the fortress has already turned into the family castle of the royal dynasty of Bragança.

The citadel has been well preserved for centuries; various historical issues of interest in the 12th century were resolved within its walls. The fortress walls cover a significant territory on which houses, churches, gardens, several towers, a huge stone cistern for collecting and storing water were located. In the XVI century. over the tank they made a superstructure in the form of a hall, surrounded by arcades around the entire perimeter. The building was named Domus Municipalis and was used as a civil court in disputes between traders and landowners. This is one of the few Romanesque civil buildings preserved in Portugal.

In the main tower of the fortress - the square tower of Menagen, a military museum is now located. Visitors can also climb onto the tower terrace, which offers panoramic city views. Close to the castle walls, the oldest shameful pillar of unusual shape in Portugal in the form of a spit boar has been preserved. The foundation dates from 500 g BC, the pillar itself XII-XIII centuries.

Church of San Vicente, built in the XIII century. and decorated with gilding in the XVII century. famous for the fact that this is the place where the secret wedding of King Don Pedro and Ines de Castro took place.

An interesting collection of archaeological finds and religious art objects is collected in the Museum of Abbot Basalsky. Bishop Basalsky (1865-1947) did a great job of local history and his finds formed the basis of the museum, which was located in the former bishop's palace. Here you can see some medieval instruments of torture, plates with Roman inscriptions, numismatic rarities, paintings, sculptures and ceramics of the XV-XX centuries.

Short description

Braganca is a city in the province of Traz-ou-Montich, located on the fertile plain of a high plateau in the north-east of Portugal, 14 km from the border with Spain. Fortifications have been erected on this hill since ancient times. The Romans called this area Brigantia. In 1130, a fortified fortress was built here, rebuilt many times over the centuries. Braganca was a feud of representatives of the Bragan dynasty that reigned in Portugal from 1640 to 1910, now it is a city of students.

The old part of Braganca is surrounded by a rampart. In the center of an impregnable stronghold stands the Bragança fortress, consisting of several round towers and the main one - square (Menazhen tower). In the spacious courtyard, they found a place not only for houses and gardens, but also for the church. Here is the oldest pillory in the country - its foundation dates back to five hundred years BC.

The unique building is Domus Municipalis - a kind of town hall of the Romanesque era, standing on a pentagonal foundation. Also interesting are the cathedral of the 16th century and the church of San Vicente, founded in the 13th century.

Among the attractions of the city can be noted the Braganca fortress, built by the king of Portugal, Sanshu I in 1187. It rises above the city and consists of a main square tower, and several round ones. For a variety of outdoor activities in Portugal, it is also worth looking at the Romanesque Town Hall Domus Municipalis, the Church of Santa Maria, the oldest pillory in the country and a 16th-century cathedral located in the historical part of the city.

Mursa District

Mursa is a small village in the north of Portugal. As in any ancient city, there is a full range of attractions: the church, the pretty city hall, and the old fountain on the cobblestone square.

But this is not what they come here for, but to look at the famous “pig from Mursa,” which is unforgivable to not know about, because you will not find another like that anywhere! Historians believe that their origin is associated with the cult of fertility, characteristic of the tribes that lived here. A granite sculpture of a pig, or, as it is called "flogging," dated to the Iron Age, is installed on a small pedestal in the main city square. Similar smaller statues are found in neighboring villages.

There is one curious historical fact that is already connected with the events of our time. The fact is that at the end of the twentieth century, political life in the village literally was in full swing, and the local government was constantly passing from one party to another. And each of the parties after the election victory repainted the pig now in green, then in red. Now the atmosphere in Mursa is calm, and the monument retains its natural granite color.

I must say that the inhabitants of the village are not too happy that the symbol of their homeland is such a disingenuous animal. Therefore, they tell the guests of the city that historians are lying, and on the pedestal the figure is actually not a pig at all, but a bear or a wild boar. But jokes are jokes, and the monument fulfills its main task - it plays the role of a symbol, which is even placed on the labels of the local red wine Porka di Mursa.
