Photo and description
The Neamt fortress castle is located near the town of Tirgu Neamt in Moldova - the Romanian region between the Prut River and the Carpathian Range.
On Ples hill, near the gorges that go through the Carpathians to Transylvania, stands this powerful and magnificent fortress of unusual architecture. The author is unknown, there is a version that the Teutonic monks led the construction. The name speaks in her favor: “yamtz” in Romanian means “German”. The construction dates suggest the early Middle Ages, and the first written mention of the fortress dates back to 1395.
The official founder of the fortress is the Moldavian prince Peter I Mushat. Its heyday is associated with Stefan the Great. He ordered the walls of incredible thickness to be increased to a height of up to 20 meters, to dig a ditch ten meters deep, over which he built a semicircular bridge on 11 pillars. On his orders, four outer bastions were erected. Thanks to this, Neamt became almost impregnable.
The common phrase “here every stone breathes history” fully refers to Neamt Castle - in it the history of the country left traces in each stone of the wall and a centimeter of the earth. In 1476, the fortress withstood the siege of the troops of the Turkish Sultan Mohammed II, in 1691 withstood the onslaught of the Poles, led by the hetman Jan Sobieski. And there are a lot of such pages in the heroic past of Neamt, this is evidenced by its walls cut by shells of all times.
The fortress lost its strategic importance by the 18th century, remaining one of the great symbols of the country. After restoration in the seventies of the last century, this impressive castle with a rich history is included in the tourist routes.
