The Republic of Mari El is located near Chuvashia and Tatarstan. It is famous for its pristine nature, virgin forests and pristine ponds. For example, the Sea Eye Lake in its beauty and purity is in no way inferior to the famous lakes of Switzerland.
Legend has it that in ancient times there was a high hill on which the village is located. One of the peasants decided to marry his own sister. In the midst of the feast, the earth beneath the sinners opened, the abyss swallowed the village. In its place a lake formed. Those who are not sinners can still hear the noise of fun that comes from a wicked wedding. The lake, as it were, lies in a huge bowl, the banks of which reach a height of 90 meters. The shape of the pond resembles the eye. The water in it is emerald. This lake is not suitable for swimming for everyone, since even in the warm season, the water warms up to no more than twenty degrees above zero. Another wonderful lake of these places is Yalchik, on its shores there are several sanatoriums and tourist centers.
The Big Kokshaga Nature Reserve and Stone Mountain Nature Reserve
Tourists are delighted with the Big Kokshaga Nature Reserve. These are the richest coniferous-deciduous places rich in various types of flora and fauna, along which several interesting tourist routes have been developed. It should be noted that the reserve is usually overcast, the weather here does not spoil sunny days. If travelers want to enjoy the contemplation of nature under the sun, then it is better to do it in July.
On the territory of the republic there is a landscape that is compared with the Alps in miniature. This is Kamennaya Gora Nature Reserve. Among this wild and extraordinary nature, the skillful creation of human hands looks very harmonious - a small gazebo near a small elegant Orthodox chapel, and next to it is a modestly equipped natural spring.
Mari Chodra National Park and caves
In the village of Gornyak there are picturesque caves. They are rich in natural ornaments - stalactites and stalagmites, and the walls are covered with hoarfrost. The caves are from permafrost, so the temperature here does not rise above six degrees of heat all year round.
Mari Chodra National Park, which translates as “Mari Forest”, is another unrivaled pearl of the region. Here is the so-called Pugachevsky oak tree, under which, according to legend, the formidable ataman-impostor was resting.
If you are interested in the sights of Mari El, you will like the description of the next palace. In the village of Yurino there is a luxurious Sheremetev castle.
It is an ornate fairytale palace, with dark red walls and a green roof. Windows and doors in a snow-white frame. Graceful turrets in the old Russian style and battlements in the Gothic style. The palace is difficult to attribute to any one architectural direction. There is a successful combination of several. Next, seven columns support the glass dome of the winter garden. Peerless interior of the castle. Particularly noteworthy is the sophistication of the Eastern Cabinet, the Picture Gallery, and the Oak Room. And also there are magnificent fireplaces. In one of them there is even a stove found during excavations in Pompeii.
Continuing to describe the sights of Mari El, the photos of which are presented in the article, one cannot but tell about the museum of the city of Yoshkar-Ola. Those wishing to learn about the history of the republic can visit it. The traditions of the indigenous people can be found in the Museum of Applied Arts. It is located in a modest one-story building with an attic. Also in the city there is a museum of peasant labor and life. The “highlight” of it is a rich collection of bells and bells.
More recently, the Tsarevokokshaysky Kremlin was built in the center of the capital. The impressive old Russian fortress made of red brick, the walls and towers are covered with a green roof, resembles the scenery for a historical film. This complex contains a church, an archaeological museum and a monument to the founder of the city, Fyodor Ioannovich.
Churches and cathedrals
The monument of Russian church architecture is the Church of the Holy Trinity. With the advent of Soviet power, it suffered the same fate as many churches in the country. It was closed and almost destroyed. The restored temple impresses with its splendor and marvelous architecture.
What other interesting sights of Mari El? For example, the Orthodox shrine of the capital of the republic is the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. This is a building with sky-high towers with reddish walls with white stripes that visually increase the height of the building. Green roofs and golden domes attract the eye of a traveler struck by this beauty for a long time.
Located near the village of Gornyak. The entrance to many caves is very narrow and located near the ground. To get inside the caves, you have to crawl through.
Inside you can see stalactites and stalagmites. In the caves it is cold all year round, even in summer it is not warmer + 6 ° C, and the walls are covered with hoarfrost at great depths. Previously, there were quarries in which millstone was mined.
This is one of the cleanest lakes in the Volga region. It has the shape of an almost perfect circle with a diameter of 680 meters. By origin, it is inter-dune, recessed with karst, with a dip near the central part of the basin. The depth gradually increases towards the middle of the lake, reaching 15 meters in its central part. The water is very clear, visibility is about 8 meters. Mineralization of water is extremely low.
This is the deepest karst lake not only in Mari El, but throughout the Middle Volga. Its maximum depth is 53 meters with a length of 800 and a width of 400 meters. The source of its nutrition are underwater springs. The lake is sewage, from it flows the river Pizhanka. On its shore is an Orthodox church.
This is the largest lake in the republic. Its area is approximately 160 hectares. It has a bizarre shape in the form of blades. The maximum depth in places of karst dips reaches 35 meters. The lake is great for fishing.
She is also known as Watchtower. On this mountain, located on the banks of the Volga, a fortified settlement was located from the eleventh to the fifteenth century. Now in that place you can see the remains of the castle moat and rampart.
Black stones in the village of Kozhlayer
These mysterious stones, similar to those in the vicinity of the village, have been here for many centuries. Most of them are in the ground. Locals consider the stones sacred. It is believed that you can not touch them.
There is a legend that one of the villagers used these stones to build the foundation of the house, and soon after the construction was completed the house burned down. There are stones on the slope of Mount Onis Kuryk. This area is known as the anomalous zone.
Their shape resembles peculiar stone mushrooms. It is due to the weathering process, in which sandstone undergoes more intense erosion and collapses faster than limestone.
The cliffs are framed by curved tree roots that have taken on a bizarre shape. Near the cliffs are a small lake and a spring with a spring flowing out of it and flowing into the small river Nevelichka flowing here. Nearby is a well-crane.
The castle was erected in the village of Yurino on the banks of the Volga by the prosperous merchant Sheremetev in the nineteenth century. It was built in the architectural traditions of medieval castles and combines different architectural styles.
This is a richly decorated palace, the architecture of which includes turrets in the old Russian style and Gothic battlements. Majestic columns support the glass dome of the conservatory. The castle is currently equipped with a hotel.
Virgin of St. Sergius Deserts
Its construction began in 1997 on the banks of the Rutka River. Now the construction of the church in the traditions of Russian wooden architecture is still ongoing here. Its patron is considered Sergius of Radonezh.
Also in the monastery there is a small house church of the Beheading of the head of St. John the Baptist. All temples, living quarters and outbuildings in the monastery were built of wood. This is the uniqueness of this monastery in architectural terms.
Yezhovsky Mironositsky Monastery
The Mironositskaya desert began its existence in 1649 at the site of the appearance of the Miracle-Working Mironositskaya Icon of the Mother of God. It was erected in the best traditions of Russian architecture of the seventeenth century and is considered an architectural monument. Near the monastery there is a holy spring and font.
Sanatorium "Maple Mountain"
The Ilet River flows through the Mari Chodra National Park near Maple Mountain. At this point, its water throughout the year has a constant temperature of about 6.5 ° C. It is caused by powerful springs at the bottom of the river and mineral springs flowing into the river, the most significant of which is called Zeleny Klyuch.
Nearby is the Boiling Square, which is a small lake with a sandy bottom. It’s as if the bottom is boiling because of the many springs that hit from the ground. The water in the springs is mineral and has healing properties.
This is one of the oldest villages in Mari El. Here at the entrance to the village you can see a stone dedicated to the local national hero - the hero Onur. A stone sign dedicated to the hero appeared in these parts in 2009. The grove near the village is considered by the locals to be sacred.

Historians tend to consider the church, consecrated in the name of the Holy Trinity in 1736, the oldest stone building in the city. However, this is only partially true. The fact is that the temple was almost completely dismantled during the period of persecution of religion. By the end of the last century, only the foundation remained from it, on which they built a modern building, distinguished by its exterior from the prototype. The new church is far from as ascetic as the traditional octagon on the four with the dead drums of its predecessor. The white-stone temple, shining with gilding domes, is decorated with kokoshniks belts, carved arches, mosaics.

The history of the temple, in which more than one generation of citizens was baptized and married, is tragic. It was built on money donated by citizens and philanthropists, and consecrated in 1759. After the October Revolution, the church was handed over to the Renovationists for a short while, and then the building was converted into a movie theater. At the numerous requests of the Yoshkarolins, the cathedral resumed its work in 1944, but, after 16 years, the authorities ordered to demolish it. The construction of a new building on this site was completed in 2010. Since then, under the arches of an elegant single-domed church - a monument of architectural classicism, church rituals are held again.

Sea Eye Lake
The lake has karst origin. The failure formed about 20 thousand years ago. The lake owes its name to the unusual green color of water. Algae live in the lake, which give the water such a shade.
The legend lives among the people that once in this region there lived a guy who fell in love with his sister. The girl reciprocated. Everyone was against this love, but the young did not obey and got married. During the wedding, the newlyweds were punished for sin and fell into the abyss. On this place the lake was formed.
The lake is located on the side of the mountain, its depth is about 37 m, the area of the lake is 2900 m2.
The name of the lake is associated with the sad and romantic history of the disappearance of the convent. Real events are intertwined with fiction. Indeed, in the last century there was a monastery on this site. It was built on moving karst rocks. They say that one of the nuns committed a terrible sin, his sisters abused him. But the higher powers were angry, and the monastery went under water for almost an hour with the nuns. They believed that with their death they could atone for the sin of the nuns and accepted death.
However, according to another story, all the novices, except the sinner, were saved.
At this place there was a lake, which is considered healing for women. It is said that divers see the domes of the monastery in the middle of the pond.
People come to the lake for fishing, collect sea buckthorn, walk through a pine forest, bathe in warm and clear water.
Stone Mountain Nature Reserve
The decision to establish a reserve in 2003 is associated with the threat of extinction of the Red Book species of plants and animals in their natural habitat. Nolkinsk Quarries (Miner)
Fans of history and speleology will be curious to wander through abandoned adits.
In some adits there is evidence of ore mining by fire, you can see huge millstones. The caves are pretty cool, in the remote adits is snow. Mysteries add stalactites and stalagmites.
Not without mysticism in this place. It is argued that in some adits time flows differently - it slows down. Legend has it that the quarry was guarded by the cave spirit - Kamai, which was cajoled with offerings in the form of a hare. Today the miners' guardian spirit has left this place.
Yezhovsky Mironositsky Monastery
The history of the monastery begins in the XVII century. It was then that the phenomenon of the miraculous image of the Most Holy Theotokos occurred to the peasant who worked in the field. The image could not be picked up, it quickly disappeared.
However, according to legend, the next day the peasant saw the same image on a tree. The man carved the image and transferred it to the house; at night he radiated light. The next day, at the place of the miraculous phenomenon, a bell rang. The fame of the shrine quickly spread throughout the district and reached Moscow. People began to come to a miraculous image and ask him for healing. At the site of the find, believers built a monastery, where the icon was before the revolution.
The Mironositsky Monastery has been carrying out the mission of spiritual enlightenment for centuries. Unfortunately, one cannot bow to the miraculous icon today. She disappeared without a trace in the 20s of the last century.
The revival of the monastery began in the late twentieth century.
The nunnery is the successor to the nunnery, a monastery founded in 1886.
The peculiarity of the monastery is that all the buildings in it are wooden. In the monastery you can worship the miraculous images, as well as the relics of St. Nectarius of Aegina.
